By Dean Kirkland, Publisher, Affluent Golfer
Affluent Golfer is back, and we’re looking for the people and places that will make its next chapter worth reading.
That means readers and subscribers, certainly. It also means writers with something to say, celebrities who enjoy the game, private clubs with stories behind their gates, and public courses, resorts and spas that give us a reason to pack a bag. Across the United States and overseas, we’re looking for the experiences that turn a golf trip into a story you’re still telling years later.
I was Affluent Golfer’s art director and staff photographer during its print years. We had a ridiculous amount of fun making that magazine. Our archive includes interviews with Clint Eastwood and Cheryl Hines, and I still have the photograph of Dennis Hopper and me at Riviera. The people, the courses, the conversations: those are the things that stayed with me. Mercifully, most of my scorecards did not.
It has taken me far too long to bring it back. Now that we’re online, I want to give that same curiosity somewhere to go.
A Round With… brings us back to the people who play the game. We’re seeking celebrity guests and welcome introductions from their representatives for relaxed conversations about golf, their work and the lives they lead. A few holes can take a conversation somewhere a hotel interview room never will. Occasionally into the trees, but that’s where some of the better stories start.
Inside the Gates explores private country clubs and golf courses through their history, design, traditions and people. We’d like to hear from clubs willing to help us tell those stories. A beautiful eighteenth hole is a promising start. The person who has looked after it for thirty years might be an even better one.
Our travel coverage has room for public courses, golf destinations, resorts and spas around the world. We’re interested in where to play, where to stay, what to eat and what else makes the trip worthwhile. The person who came along but would rather spend the afternoon at the spa deserves a good itinerary, too. They should not have to develop a short game to enjoy the vacation.
Then there’s everything we find along the way: the cars people drive, the watches they wear, the wines they open, and the pleasures that keep a good day going after the clubs are back in the trunk. Golf gives us the starting point. The people and their lives give us the stories. Tournament leaderboards already have plenty of people watching them.
We’re also inviting writers and contributors to get involved. Bring us a sharp idea, a distinctive voice, a place you know well or someone we ought to meet. Good reporting and a sense of humor are a useful combination. A flawless handicap is entirely unnecessary, which is fortunate for several people involved in this operation.
Readers can explore the magazine at affluentgolfermag.com and join the newsletter. Contributors, publicists, club representatives and destination teams are invited to send a short introduction and an outline of their story or feature idea to dean@gasandgears.com.
We had a wonderful time making Affluent Golfer the first time around. I’d like to do that again, with some familiar faces, plenty of new ones, and perhaps slightly better judgment about how much golf can fit into a working day.
Come be part of it.
